Influence of artificial surface accumulations on geological environment

Erection of a dam and forming an artificial surface water on a certain part of the waterway creates completely new ecological conditions in the nearest vicinity of the accumulation. Newly formed conditions have a significant influence, among others, to the geological environment where the accumulation lake is formed. Besides evidently positive effects created by the erection of the surface accumulation, there are also unwanted effects influencing the geological environment as the result of sinking and distorting geomorphologic and geological objects and localities (that are frequenty very attractive). On the example of the potential accumulation Pastric on the river Ribnica near Mionica, Serbia (Yugoslavia), 18 speleological objects are presented with basical characteristics, that would be sinned if the project of this accumulation had been perfomed. When selecting the damming place, great attetion should be paid to the influence of the newly designed accumulation to the geological environment, as well as to make certain compromises to preserve the specific features of that geological environment for our descendants.
