Trichinelosis is a parasitic disease caused by larval forms of the genus Trichinella. Rats represent important infection reservoirs of Trichinella spiralis. Over the last few years, trichinelosis has been spreading in Serbia (Yugoslavia). Ivermectin is widely used in control of various larval and adult endoparasites of humans, domestic and wild animals. In this experiment, we used three experimental groups, of 10 albino Wister rats of the same age and sex per group. Rats were infected artificially by trichinelous swine meat in a dose of 200 larvae per animals. On the third day following infection rats of the first and second group were treated by a single subcutaneous dose of Ivermectin of 300 microgram/kg, (the first group), and 600 microgram/kg, (the second group). The third group comprised control animals. Ivermectin had a profound effect on adult forms of Trichinella spiralis. This was observed for both tested doses. Ivermectin applied at the double therapeutic dose caused a more profound the parasiticide effect in the tested interval compared to the lour therapeutic dose applied against adult forms of Trichinella spiralis.
