Effect of different stress conditions on germination of several maize genotypes (Zea mays L.)

Possibility of use of vigor tests (cold test and accelerated ageing test), similarities and differences between vigor tests and standard seed germination test in different maize hybrids was studied. The effects of increased salt content in substrate (use of NaCl), the effect of drought (use PEG) and increased water content in substrate (Hypoxia test) on germination and seedling length of maize was estimated at the same time. The obtained results show that there are the differences between different seed germination tests. This stands for all tested maize hybrids. Maize seed is susceptible to some stresses that appear in natural conditions. It can be concluded that drought and increased salt content cause decrease in maize seed germination, and decrease in seedling root and above-ground part length. In hypoxia test, seed germination was lower compared to the standard test. Increased substrate humidity leads to root formation, but prevents formation of seedling above-ground part. Seed germination tests should be further improved (standardization should be done), so that they comply with existing norms of seed quality and market demands. This study showed that seed could stand some stress conditions up to certain extent. Beside that, the limits under which seed looses its quality were determined.
