Garden sage (Salvia officinalis L.) extraction and residue exploitation after distillation

In this research the extracts of the residue after garden sage distillation were investigated, as the raw materials for the products with antimicrobial activity. At the same time, the extraction from the undistilled dry herb was performed, during what the solvents, temperature, time and extraction methods (ultrasound, maceration, Soxhlet) were compared. The highest content of dry residue is obtained by polar solvents (glacial acetic acid 33.7%, water 19.2%), but the lowest percent is obtained by non-polar solvents extraction (petrol ether 2.2%). Also, the most of dry residue is obtained by the Soxhlet exraction and then by ultrasonic extraction and maceration. In ultrasonic extraction more of dry residue is obtained at the boiling temperature of the solvent. Antimicrobial actions of the obtained extracts and isolated essential oil were compared by diffusion method. The highest activity is on Saccharomyces cerevisiae (only petrol ether extracts).
