Characteristics of sugar market in FR [the Federal Republic of] Yugoslavia

In our country, sugar production is caused by supply of the primary product, sugar beet. Production results, which our country has been accomplished till the beginning of the last decade, classified our country at the very top of European sugar beet and sugar producers. Nevertheless, in the last ten years all the crucial parameters for these products have extremely negative tendencies (planted areas, yields, technological quality, production of sugar beet and sugar) and they are the result of cumulative effects of larger number of factors, mainly of economic nature. In order to stop these negative tendencies in our country, it is necessary firstly to create stabile conditions to motivate producers of the primary product and, in that way, to increase the exploitation degree of the existing industrial facilities. The main goal has to be to satisfy the needs of domestic market with self-production, i.e. exemption of import, and after that, production of possible surplus quantities for export, which demands marketing approach to the entire question.
