Genetic diverity of recent bovine viral diarrhoea viruses from Slovenia and Yugoslavia

Recent isolates of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) collected in Slovenia (15) and Yugoslavia (3) were examined for their genomic heterogeneity. The 5'-untranslated region (5'UTR) amplified by one-tube reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was characterized by direct sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. All isolates were classified into BVDV genotype 1, and sub-divided into three subgroups (1b, 1d and 1f). Predomination of BVDV 1f subtype (Slovenia - 7 isolates, Yugoslavia - 2 isolates) and BVDV 1d subtype (Slovenia - 7 isolates) was observed. One isolate from Yugoslavia (0017), very similar to reference strain Osloss, and one isolate from Slovenia were grouped as BVDV 1b. No BVDV type 2 or border disease virus (BDV) isolates were found. The sequences of the recently obtained BVDVs from Slovenia were very similar or identical to the older isolates in the region studied. There was close association between geographical and phylogenetic clustering, suggesting virus dispersal via close contacts or trading of infected cattle in the past. This is first report of genetic typing of BVDV isolates from Yugoslavia.
