Monitoring of environmental protection status in the Iron Gate reservoirs, so called 10th Programme has been developed aiming to collect basic data on all pollution sources and pollution balancing in the IG reservoirs. During the phase 1 of the 10th Programme the in-stream transboundary pollution has been identified in the Danube, the Drava, the Sava and the Tisza rivers, as well as the in-stream pollution in the domicile rivers. Also, the overall pollution from point sources has been identified and quantified on the territory of the Republic of Serbia with discharges directly to the Danube river. For the following period, phase 2 of the Programme, it has been planned to make a thorough screening and analysis of quality status of ambient waters, on the whole Danube course through Serbia, as well as on the confluence of all major tributaries. It has also been planned to make screening and analysis of the largest point sources of pollution in the vinicity of the Danube course, as well as non-point sources. The ultimate task of this Programme is to set a simulation water quality model for the river stretch in the IG reservoirs, and yet to be further improved on the basis of new monitoring data sets. Our intention is to stress the necessity of implementation of 10th Programme on the whole, by means of defining all relevant point and non-point sources in regard to environmental protection and sustainable use of the Danube river.
