Our country is one of the European countries that suffer from chronic problems concerning the lack of energy resources. This is above all true in respect of oil and gas that have to be imported and for which huge resources of money have to be provided. We have enough coal for the next 50 - 70 years and ecology problems that arise from coal burning have to be taken into consideration when decisions are made on the matter of building new thermo-electric power plants. The power of our hydro-electric power plants is around 3000 MW (January 2003), the possible increasement in the next 20 years being 1000 MW. All this cannot satisfy the estimated energy needs of the population of Serbia and Montenegro in the twenty-first century. Our paper shows how are these problems solved in the world and also in EU countries. Wind will in future present a significant alternative source of energy (more than 20%). Because of that, we have to look for good locations in our country and estimate our wind potential for the purpose of starting to build wind generators which produce ecologically clean electric power.
