Variability of flower number and fertilization in various generations of selfing in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)
2004
Jovanovic, D.
The objective of this study was to use disc flower number and seed number per plant to assess the effects of particular variation sources on the variation of fertilization rate per plant and variability and grouping within the self-pollinated sunflower lines in different generations of inbreeding. The study was conducted using 155 self-pollinated lines in different generations of self-pollination. Ten different lines were obtained whose average number of disc flowers per plant ranged between 1500 and 2000. The trait with the largest variability in the lines of the S6 selfed generation was seed number per plant. The overall coefficient of variation for the lines was 26.5%. Lines of the S6 generation were developed whose mean values of the traits concerned were higher than the average values of the same traits relative to the resulting materials. The overall mean value for flower number per plant in the lines of the S6 generation was 1034. The minimum was recorded in line 35899/34 (547) and the maximum in line 865424/27 (2007). The overall mean value of seed number per plant was 533, with the minimum having been recorded in 358913/1 (217) and the maximum in 865417/30 (1127). The average fertilization rate per plant was 53.47%, ranging from 7.7% in 865418/2 to 78.7% in 93223/15. Three S6 self-pollinated sunflower lines were obtained with respect to seed number and fertilization rate per plant, namely 86356/11, 93223/34 and 932213/13.
