Stress may be defined as any factor that reduces yield performance under the maximum achievable level. The stresses that affect plants can be grouped in three categories: soil, atmospheric and biotic. Relationships among the factors that affect plants are complex and they cannot be viewed separately because they are invariably interactive. Other important aspects are the stage of plant growth and development when a stress strikes and its duration and intensity. Some stress factors are unforeseeable, unavoidable and uncontrollable. Still, most of them can be avoided or mitigated by cultural practices and other short- or long-term measures. In the previous year, soybean suffered a series of stresses which lasted throughout the growing season, resulting in the average yield below the long-term average.
