The role of calcium in plant physiology as well as some physiological diseases related to calcium deficiency are more and more often reflexed recently. Diseases caused by calcium deficiency are rather frequent in paprika, tomato, cucumber and lettuce, however, they have been observed also in egg plant, melon and watermelon cultures. Low calcium content in the soil is rarely the cause of the disease in horticultural crops, including vegetables. Much more often occurs the so called relative calcium deficiency: the plants are unable to utilize the calcium content of the soil because of environmental condition or because of intrinsic plant factors.
