Gypsum and lime effects on soybean nodulation and competitiveness of strains of Bradyrhizobium

Low soil pH may affect the availability of aluminium and calcium in soil. These three soil factors have been reported to affect soybean growth, nodulation and competitiveness of Bradyrhizobium japonicum straints. A glasshouse experiment was conducted to study the effect of Al, Ca and pH level on Al tolerant, soybean growth, nodulation, and competitiveness of B. japonicum strains differ in their sensitivity to acid soil stress factors. Acid soil was treated with either CaCO3 or CaSO4 and incubated for two weeks before sowing soyben seeds. Two strain combinations (i) acid sensitive vs moderately acid tolerant, and (ii) acid sensitive vs acid tolerant were inoculated onto soybean seeds at equal rate (10 at the power of 6 clu/seed). The treatments were arranged in completely randomized block design with four replicates. The results showed that soybean growth and nodulation were very restricted at 72 micro M monomeric Al at soil solution. Increasing Ca concentration from 1420 micro M to 12463 micro M was not able to alleviate the effect of 72 micro M monomeric Al on soybean growth and nodulation. The competitiveness pattern of B. japonicum strains was not affected by acid soil stress factors. Where strain that were found competitive at low soil pH, were also competitive at neutral soil pH
