Studies on population dynamics of mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi on mustard in relation to some meteorological factors
2003
Prasad, S.K.(Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi (India). Division of Entomology)
The monitoring of mustard aphid was studied on Pusa Kalyani, (Brassica rapa, brown sarson), DYS-3 (Brassica rapa, yellow sarson) and Pusa Bold (B. juncea) varieties of mustard for12 years, i.e., from 1989-90 to 2000-01 to find out the variability in the population in different years. Some weather factors like maximum and minimum temperatures, relative humidity (morning) and relative humidity (afternoon), and Rainfall were also recorded to find out their impact on the population. The aphid was first noticed on the inflorescence shoot as early as in 51* week during 1996-97 and as late as in 5* week during 1998-99. At initial stage the number of aphids/plant were between 1 to 61. Thereafter, the number started increasing and reached to peak level. The number of aphids at peak and the time of reaching peak also differed in different years. The peak reached earliest (6ch standard week) in 1990-91 and in 9"1 standard week in 2000-2001. The number of aphids at peak was maximum of 2350/plant in 1992-93 and minimum of 60 aphids/plant during 1998-99 crop season. The aphids were on the plants for shortest period of 5 weeks during 1999-2000 and for longest period of3 weeks during 1996-97.S
