Land use is a multifaceted subject and encompasses a wide range of disciplines and enterprises. Prescribing a specific landuse in a particular ecological unit is a complex exercise due to diversity of influences acting on land and demands of too many sectors/users, operating at the micro-situation level. Indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources, fast growing population pressure on land and general neglect of environment causing land degradation, are some of the problems recognized at national and regional levels in our country. For effective management and conservation of natural resources, particularly the land resources, the focus of planning and execution will have to be converged at the level of micro-situations. Land attributes and qualities have, therefore, to be evaluated at micro-level which may be a micro-watershed.
