Variation in photosynthesis, transpiration, water use efficiency, light transmission and leaf area index in multipurpose agroforestry tree species

Twelve, 10 years old, multipurpose species have been compared for their growth and physiology status. Out of 12 MPTs, Grewia optiva, Bauhinia variegata, Robinia pseudoacacia, Melia azedarach, Dalbergia sissoo, Gmelina arborea and Albizia stipulata have excelled in height, diameter and crown growth up to 10 years. Photosynthesis rate was significantly higher in most of the tree species from July to November. Transpiration rate was higher in Morus, Bauhinia, Robinia, Malia, Dalbergia, Toona, Celtis, Gmelina, Sapindus and Albizia over the remaining tree species. Transpiration declined after August. Water use efficiency (WUE) has been found to be low for all the 12 MPTs where values ranged between 0.0031 and 0.0870 with the maximum WUE in Albizia and the minimum in MOrus. The canopies of these tree species have intercepted a significant amount of photosynthetically active radiation and allowed only 7-22 per cent transmission of PAR beneath tree canopy. Leaf area index (LAI) from June to November ranged between 0.47 and 3.23. Monthly variations in LAI have been observed for all the tree species where Grewia, Bauhinia, Robinia, Melia, Dalbergia, Albizia and Punica recorded increasing LAI from June to November whereas Morus, Toona, Sapindus and Gmelina followed decreasing trend.
