In this research, the situation of milk production in Latvia has been evaluated and development perspectives in Latvia after entering the European Union have been explained. At present in Latvia about 78% of cows are kept in small cowsheds which can house no more than 20 animals. It is not possible to ensure sufficiently cheap and qualitative milk production in such sheds. Therefore, great attention should be paid to building new cowsheds and reconstruction of the existing ones. It has been clarified that it is possible to reconstruct the dairy complexes built in the 70-ies and 80-ies introducing loose handling of cows in boxes. Building of light construction cowsheds is also useful. It is possible to build such sheds within a few months investing 3-4 times less capital investments.
