Development of cold tolerant rice varieties for the western hills of Nepal

In order to improve the yield potentials of rice in the western hills of Nepal, different field experiments were conducted during 1999/00-2001/02 in Agriculture Research Station (ARS) Lumle's Research Command Area (RCA). Advanced breeding lines were evaluated in mid to high hills for their low temperature tolerance. Yield potentials of promising lines were tested under target environments. A few selected lines were evaluated under farmers' field conditions and the farmers' perception on the improved genotypes was taken into consideration. In advanced breeding lines, genotypes LR 01006-2Y (two sister lines), Lumle 1-1-1, Lumle 5-1 and Lumle 1-9-1 were found to be promising under high hill environments. In IET, genotypes; LR 91006 (4116 kg per hectare), Lumle-2 (3769 kg per hectare), Lumle 5-1 (3628 kg per hectare) and Lumle 1-9 (3368 kg per hectare) were found promising in yield potential at Lumle during 1999. During 2000 summer season, LR 91006-2Y (two sister lines), Lumle 1-1 and LR 93011-OC-1 were high yielder at Lumle, whereas Lumle 1-9, LR 93002-OC, Lumle 1-1 and LR 93015-OC were high yielder at Bhakimli. In Coordinated Varietal Trial (2001), LR 93002, LR 93004, LR 93015, LR 91006 and Lumle 1-1 were found promising in yield at both locations (Lumle and Bhakimli). Similarly, in Farmers' Field Trial, Lumle 2, LR 91006 and Lumle 5-1 were fooound highly promising in yield at both locations during 2000. LR 93002 and LR 91006 were found superior over Chhomrong in FFT during 2001 for the high hills. Lumle 2, cross of IR 36 and Chhomrong, was highly preferred by high hill farmers.
