Banana is a premier crop in the Philippines. However, wastage ranges from 30% to 40% from Mindanao to Manila. While big commercial farms have excellent postharvest handling practices, small growers and traders employ minimal care. The critical points in the present banana handling system were identified and postharvest interventions were suggested. Handling bananas from the farm to the market was documented and simulated in the laboratory to determine its effect on fruit quality. The critical points were harvesting, hauling, loading, packing house operations, unloading and transport. Based on experiment and handling trials, a top load of 20-40 kg caused early ripening and visual deterioration within 3-4 days of storage at 25 deg C. Conventional containers use in bulk loading have capacities of 20 kg to 6-8 tons. Dropping bananas on metal surface from a height of one meter caused finger-dropping and browning which became pronounced when fruits ripened. Less and careful handling, and use of liners and smaller containers like cartons and wooden crates offer protection to bananas during handling
