Food carrying and income-generating capacities of the rice sector: nutritional status among rice households

Results of the study showed that five provinces [in the Philippines] have a severe prevalence of underweight children: Isabela (92%), Camarines Sur (90%), Davao del Norte (84%), Davao del Sur (86%), and South Cotabato (88%). On a national level, 7 of every 10 children, 5 years old and below, are underweight. Across the 10 provinces, agroecology, and seed class, the Kilocalorie (Kcal) equivalent of rice and total food intakes are lower than the RDA [recommended dietary allowance] of 1000 Kcal for rice and 2000 Kcal for total food. However, a household's rice and total food consumption seem to be positively correlated with seed class. This implies that hybrid seed users tend to satisfy their food consumption requirement better than ordinary seed users. Almost all rice consumption among households comes from their own produce. On a national scale, homegrown rice accounts for around 94% and 84% of total rice intake among households in irrigated and non-irrigated areas, respectively. In contrast, pork (95-99%), beef (98%), and fish (92-94%) are generally bought by rice households. Chicken and vegetables come from both domestic production and market sources
