Management of clubroot in crucifers (Plasmodiophora brassicae Wor.) using microbial antagonists, line and pentachloronitrobenzene

Clubroot caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae is considered the most important disease of crucifers worldwide. Three promising microbial antagonists, namely: Flavobacterium sp., Pseudomonas sp. and Paecilomyces sp. applied alone and in combination with lime and sub-lethal dose of Pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB) were evaluated to determine their efficacy against the disease and consequently assess their effects on cabbage yield. The different treatments did not significantly affect the final soil pH and fresh root weight. However, significant reduction in clubroot infection was noted. The most effective treatments were lime + Flavobacterium sp. + PCNB with 49.29% disease reduction. These were comparable to lime + Paecilomyces sp. + PCNB, lime alone, Paecilomyces sp. alone with 46.65, 41.58, 40.57, 38.13 and 31.44% reduction, respectively. On the other hand, clubroot infection of plants treated with Flavobacterium sp. alone was comparable to the untreated control. Effective control of the disease resulted in substantial increase in crop yield. The highest percentage yield increase was recorded from plants applied with lime + Flavobacterium sp. + PCNB. However, it is comparable to those treated with combination of lime. Pseudomonas sp. and PCNB, lime + Paecilomyces sp. + PCNB, Paecilomyces sp. alone, lime alone and Pseudomonas sp. alone with 138.89, 125.00, 120.83, 120.83, 122.22% and 109.72%, respectively. Plants applied with Flavobacterium sp. alone significantly lower yield compared to the other treatments but significantly higher than the untreated control
