A cluster analysis was done on 18 sampling stations located along the 5-km length of a mangrove creek (Solod-Tunggan River) and the adjacent seagrass bed (Mactan Island), Central Philippines. The objective is to group sampling sites with similar attributes to optimize future sampling activities. The multivariate data include environmental parameters collected during 2001 namely: salinity, total suspended solids (TSS) of the water, total organic matter (TOM) and grain size distribution of the sediments. The cluster analysis yielded five groups; each group having a particular attribute. Group 1 is the seagrass area with similar salinity and sediment composition. Group 2 has relatively moderate percentage of sand and TSS. Group 3 has higher % sand than granules, and low TSS. Group 4 has higher % granule than sand, and higher TSS. Group 5 has very high TSS, high TOM, high % granule in the sediments and low salinity. The groupings should optimize future sampling of other environmental parameters along the length of the creek and the adjacent seagrass bed
