Ecological solid waste management (ESWM) system for peri-urban agriculture

The increasing volume of solid wastes and the consequent increase in land and water pollution in Metro Manila [Philippines] warrant the need for an effective and ecologically sound waste management system, which adopts the 3Rs principle, i.e. reduce, reuse, recycle. Biodegradable wastes have to be returned to the soil to serve as fertilizer while nonbiodegradable wastes have to be recycled. The ESWM embodies these principles and is expected to reduce pollution and restore ecological balance. Within this framework it was attempted to pilot tested the ESWM system by promoting urban agriculture through raising vegetables and ornamental plants in households' backyards. The study was conducted in Barangay [village] Vasra, Quezon City from 2000 to 2002. Thirty-one information, education, and communication (IEC) campaign activities consisting of lectures, seminars, and actual demonstration/trainings on ESWM were done in collaboration with the LGU [local government units]. Composts derived from the household wastes and the base oil materials were analyzed in terms of nutrient and hazardous chemical composition.
