Development of [rice] breeding lines for the Cordillera [Philippines]
2004
Anon.
Seven promising lines with average yields of more than 3.5 t/ha were identified, PR27137-CR153 is cold-tolerant and blast-resistant for the DS [dry season] crop in mid-elevation areas in the Cordillera. PR 29814-B-3-1-1, early-maturing, comparable to Gohang, most outstanding across seasons and locations in the 2003 NCT [National Cooperative Tests], yielded 3.8 t/ha. The other lines are panicle blast-resistant, have high amylose content, and very good head rice recovery. Characterization was initiated on 63 traditional germplasm collected from various Cordillera provinces using the IPGRL protocol for morpho-agronomic traits. Thirty traditional varieties were tested, and Kintuman red, Kintuman long-awned, Putian, Pugot, Sadanga native, and three strains of Pinidua were selected based on phenotypic acceptability, yield, and field resistance to panicle blast. More than 300 varieties were retrieved from the IRRI [International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] genebank for further evaluation in the 2004 DS. Cold-tolerant crosses contain high iron, zinc, and micronutrients
