Effects of dietary protein and energy on growth, protein utilization and body composition of juvenile grouper, Epinephelus coioides

Feeding trial were conducted to determine the effects of dietary protein and energy levels on growth protein utilization and body composition of juvenile Epinephelus coioides. Weight gain was significantly affected by dietary protein and energy. Feeding diets which contained either high protein, high energy or both resulted in higher weight gains. Rate of protein deposition on an equal-amount-of diet or energy-fed basis was also affected by dietary protein and energy level. Varying dietary protein to energy ratio significantly affected body composition. Body protein increased with increasing dietary protein or energy content. Diets which contained the lowest and highest P:ME ratio resulted in the maximum and minimum body fat, respectively. Juvenile E. coioides could very well adapt to a reduction in the optimum dietary protein level from 55% to 44% if the dietary metabolize energy was elevated from 3276 Kcal/kg to 4217 Kcal/kg
