Inter-varietal differences of absorbed-phosphorus utilization in cotton exposed to P-free nutrition: Part II. P-absorption and remobilization in plant

Translocation of absorbed P from metabolically inactive to active sites in plants growing under P-deficient conditions may increase its utilization efficiency. An experiment was, conducted in hydroponics culture whereby six cotton cultivars were exposed to no P nutrition for 30 days after initial feeding on optimum nutrition for 14 days. The concentration and content of P in various plant organs were statistically different in these cultivars at 14 and 44 days after transplanting (DAT). All the cultivars retranslocated P from above ground parts to their roots during growth in P- free conditions, the magnitude of which was variable in different cultivars. Phosphorus concentration at 44 DAT was higher in developing leaves compared to developed leaves. On the basis of results of this study, it can be assumed that internal remobilization of acquired P and its possible retranslocation from shoots to roots may have helped the tolerant cultivars to establish a better rooting system, which provided basis for tolerance against P-deficiency stress.
