Preliminary studies on larval infestation of Cydia pomonella (L.) (Tortricidae: Lepidoptera) and a trial on its rearing on apple under ambient conditions in Kashmir [Pakistan]

The preliminary studies on larval infestation of Cydia pomonella (L.) on apple fruit at two sites in Dheerkot (Bagh) locality, Kashmir, Pakistan and a trial on the rearing of larva in the field insectary on fruit under ambient conditions was conducted during 1999. The present studies describe the overall larval infestation on different apple cultivars (Bankv, Golden, Kashmiri, Star-Crimson and Star-King), seasonal variation, spatial distribution of C. pomonella larva and a trial on the rearing of larva on apple. The data indicates that all the indigenous and introduced cultivars of apple were found infested by larva with varying degree of susceptibility. Out of 633 apples of five different varieties, 281 were damaged by this pest. The infestation ranged from 9.15 to 88.59% with an over all average of 44.39%. Among studied varieties, Star-Crimson was comparatively the least infested (9.15%) whereas the indigenous cultivars Kashmiri, was found highly susceptible (88.59%) for larval infestation. The peak larval infestation (76.47%) was recorded in the first week of July 1999. Of 48 larvae from sampled apple, 36 larvae died due to unknown reasons whereas 13 reached at pupal stage whilst only 7 turned into moth under ambient conditions. The present findings reveal that the pest is evenly distributed all over the apple canopy and can be reared on apple under natural conditions. It also appeared that C. pomonella gives a great amount of damage to apple crop and is widely distributed in all the apple orchards of Dheerkot, Kashmir (Pakistan).
