Effect of time of application of dithane M-45 on control of black scurf disease of potato
2000
Zeb, B.S.
The present study was made to know the effect of time of application of Dithane M-45 on black scurf disease and yield in potatoes. A pot experiment was laid out under artificial inoculation conditions during spring 2000. The experiment consisted of four treatments (application of Dithane M-45 at the rate of 500 ppm two weeks before and two weeks after planting, at the time of planting and no application) each replicated ten time in a randomized complete block design. Seed tubers of variety Cardinal were planted in 25 cm earthen pots having sterilized soil. The latter was inoculated one week before planting with sclerotia of R. solani at the rate of one petriplate/pot. Fungicide Dithane M-45 was added to these pots at the proper time as mentioned above. Twelve weeks after planting the potato crop was harvested and data were recorded on disease incidence and severity, fresh root weight, fresh plant weight, plant height, tuber size and tuber weight/plant. All data were analyzed statistically using analysis of variance, LSD test and correlation and regression analysis. In treatments where the fungicide was applied, the disease was lower and yield or yield components were higher than the untreated. Among the fungicide treatments, T2 where Dithane M-45 was applied at the time of planting showed the lowest score of disease incidence(28.37%) and severity (2.71%), However, the yield and yield components in this treatment were non-significantly different than that in other treatments. Further confirmation of these results is suggested.
