Effect of light intensity on egg production using intermittent lighting in laying hens

The study was carried out to investigate the interaction between the intensity of illumination and duration of the pulse needed to support maximum rate of lay in laying hens. Two lighting systems were compared: Intermittent lighting and continuous lighting. There were seven light regimes and all treatments had in common an 8h base photo-period followed by either 8h continuous photo-period or eight-lm hourly pulses of light, both at one of the three test levels of illumination. These were 20, 5, 1.25 and zero lux (negative control). The results indicated that the response of birds to light intensity was maximum at 20 lux with both lighting systems. The rate of lay dropped substantially with the reduction in light intensity from 20 to 5 lux or 1.25 lux (equal to negative control) but the decline was not so sharp with continuous light. The results suggested further investigations to explore interaction of light intensity with duration, number and timing of pulses(s).
