Population trends and taxonomic studies of thrips on different cultivars of cotton in Faisalabad [Pakistan]

The present project was conducted to see population trends of thrips of cotton during growing season on NIAB Karishma, CIM-448 and FH-901, to record the impact of population and to know common species found on cotton in Faisalabad. The maximum average population of thrips per leaf was 4.029 on NIAB Karishma and minimum, was 2.079 on 448. The regression equation calculated among temperature, relative humidity and thrips per leaf population on different cultivars showed non-significant results. Totally 8 species of thrips under different genera have from the specimens collected from NIAB Karishma, FH-901 and CIM-448. Thrips palmi Karny (Genus Thrips Linnaeus) was found in maximum numbers, the next to it were the species, viz., Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Genus Thrips Linnaeus), Thrips flavus Schran Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Genus Scirtothrips Shull) and Florithrips traegardhi Trybom (Genus Florithrips Bhatti). Whereas the species found in. minimum were scolothrips indicus Priesner (Genus Scolothrips Hinds), Frankliniella schultzei Trybom Genus Frankliniella Schmaltz) and Rhipiphorothrips cruentatus Hood (Genus Rhipiphorothrips Morgan). Complete description, variation characters from the published description, and the new characters if any of the species have been recorded. Illustrations of taxonomically important characters are also given.
