Rice straw was used to produce active carbon and furfural. Acid hydrolysis of raw material was carried out separately with 16 % HCI and H2SO4 at 100 and 140 minutes of digestion time in a solid; liquid ratio of 1:3, 1:5, 1:10 both in the presence and absence of salt catalysts. The residue left after extraction was activated at 700 degree C for producing active carbon. Yield of furfural increased by increasing digestion time from 100 to 140 minutes in all solid; liquid ratios as well as in presence and absence of salt catalysts using H2SO4 as hydrolyzing agent. The percent yield of active carbon decreased by increasing digestion time. the 1:5 solid: liquid ratio was he best for H2SO4 as well as HCI and ZnCl2 proved to be best catalyst, while adsorption efficiency of active carbon increased by increasing digestion time as well as solid: liquid ratio. H2SO4 is a better hydrolyzing agent than HCL. The maximum yield of furfural was 28.5 % at 140 minutes digestion time with 16 % H2SO4 and ZnCl2 as a catalyst.
