Estimation of variability parameters and correlations for quantitative traits in Cicer arietinum L.

The estimates of genetic variability parameters and correlations for various quantitative traits in eighteen elite chickpea genotypes (inclusive two commercial varieties) was conducted. The layout was a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Variability estimates revealed that sufficient genetic variability existed among the genotypes for the characters plant height (cm), number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, 100-seed Weight (g), total eight of the plant (g) and seed yield per plant (g). Heritability for these traits indicated that selection: could be more effective for genetic improvement. From the data it was revealed that genotype 660 took maximum days to flowering. Genotype 836 took maximum days to mature. Genotype BRC-27 was the top scorer for number of primary branches per plant. The number of secondary branches per plant genotypes 1117-1 was the top scorer. Genotype 549 had maximum plant height. Genotypes 102 produced maximum number of pods per plant. Genotype BRC-27 gave maximum number of seeds per pod. Regarding number of seeds per plant 100-seed weight, total weight of the plant and seed yield per plant, Bittal-98 was he top scorer. Genotypic correlation of seed yield per plant with number of primary branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight and total weight of the plant was positive and significant, whereas at the phenotypic level the correlation coefficients were highly significant. From the results, it may be concluded that number, of days to maturity, number of secondary branches per plant, plant height and number of seeds per pod, which showed positive and non- significant correlation with yield, may be due to biological relationship between the characters. However, in view of the positive and significant correlations, selection for number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod 100-seed weight and total weight of the plant would be much helpful as selection criteria for improved yield potential in chickpea.
