Role of sunflower meal and wheat bran on the growth performance of major carps (Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Catla catla) in fertilized ponds

The experiment was conducted for the period of six month in two earthen ponds, on both was fertilized and T1 contain supplementary feed sunflower meal and T2 contain wheat bran, each of area, 0.02 ha. After preliminary preparation each pond was stocked with 20 Labeo rohita, 15 Cirrhinus mrigala, 15 Catla catla. After the next day of stocking, fertilization of both ponds T1 and T2 was done on the basis of nitrogen derived from organic manure (cow dung) supplementary feed (sunflower meal and wheat bran was added at the rate of 2% fish body weight daily. Fertilization was done weakly in fertilized pond. Cultural fish stock both from T1 as well as T2 were sampled after every fortnight to study the growth performance viz., body weight and total length. After recording the data, fishes were released back water sample from both of these ponds were taken fortnightly and analyzed for its physicochemical characteristics. In T1 the average weight gains of 163.0, 162.0 and 170.9g were recorded for Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and Catla catla respectively, ion T2 the average weight gains of 142.9, 148.2 and 155.5g were recorded for Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and Catla catla respectively. The pond treated with sunflower meal and wheat bran caused a marked increased a marked increased in fish production. Net fish yield (all the species together) in T1 and T2 330.14 kg/ha/year and 296.54 kg/ha/year respectively, however gross fish production/ha/ year were computed to be 825.35 kg and 741.35 kg in T1 and T2 respectively. T1 showed greater net fish production as compared to that of T2. Planktonic biomass showed positive and non significant correlation with water tem. In T1. Planktonic biomass showed negative and highly significant correlation with dissolved oxygen in T1.
