Effect of nitrogen levels on the yield of different gram (Cicer arietinum L.) varieties

A field experiment was laid out in a slit plot design to evaluate the effect of various N levels (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 kg ha-1) for three gram varieties (Cholla, Sanyasi and DG-89). The varieties were assigned to main plots and fertilizer applications to sub plots with four replications. All treatments received P2O5 at the rate of 70 kg ha-1. The soil was clayey (46.8% clay), alkaline (pH 7.9), Calcareous (8.72% CaCO3), low in organic matter (0.81%), poor in total N (0.045%), medium in available P (6.5 mg kg-1 Olsen P) and adequate in exchangeable K (256 ppm). Maximum plant height at maturity was noted for Cholla followed by Sanyasi and DG-89 for N at the rate of 40 kg ha-1. The highest grain yield (2699 kg ha-1) was recorded for DG-89 for N at the rate of 0 kg ha-1. Nitrogen application of 40 kg ha-1 gave maximum plant height, N content of grain, protein content of grain, N content of straw, straw yield (kg ha-1) and grain yield (kg ha-1) for all varieties. The interaction of N rate x varieties was significant for plant height, grain yield and straw at the rate of N 40 kg ha-1 while DG-89 gave maximum grain yield (2699 kg ha-1).
