In the article analyse the farm structures, their economic potential and to foresee the trends for the increase of farm competitiveness and perspective. Object of the research family and household farms, agricultural partnerships and other users of agricultural land. Often farm size in hectares or farm income per 1 ha of agricultural land does not show farm economic power and, thus, is impossible to compare the farms in Lithuania with the farms in other countries. The EU countries for this purpose use economic farm size, which is characterized by standard gross margin (SGM). Farm SGM is calculated as follows: crop areas and/or animal numbers are multiplied by corresponding standard gross marginsthe products are added up. The evaluation of family farms by the EU in ESU shows that under the present market conditions most of Lithuanian family farms (about 90 percent) fall into the group of very small farms (4 ESU). The estimation of agricultural partnerships by the EU methods in ESU shows quite different situation than in family farms. The majority of agricultural partnerships fall into the groups of large economic size. To the large farm group (40-100 ESU) fall 21 percent of all agricultural partnerships, to the group of 100-200 ESU 23 percent and to the larger than 200 ESU group 26 percent. Only 15 percent of agricultural partnerships belong to the small farm group
