Several early varieties of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), received from ICRISAT (International Crop Research Institute for Semid-Arid Tropics) were tesyed in southern Benin Republic, under a development programme aiming at the improvement of nutrition through the introduction of higher yielding pulses with high protein content, increasing soil fertility, and providing local cattle with nutritious fodder. Variety V02 is the highest yielder with 3705 Kg/ha of seed and 8500 kg/ha of air dry fodder. Varieties that were of medium earliness (125 days to 1st harvest) were the best. In a second trial V10 was the best variety in rich soils but performed badly under poor fertility. Variety V02 is second best under rich conditions and among the best in poor soil. This variety is now widely accepted in all the villages where it was introduced, among them the villages ehere a development programme is under way
