Genotypic and phenotypic correlations between yield and some yield components and fibre characteristics in some cotton (Gossypium spp.) genotypes

Twelve cotton (Gossypium spp.) genotypes, belonging to two species, were evaluated over two seasons (1999/2000 and 2000/2001), at five locations in the irrigated area of central Sudan, using a randomized complete block design. Data were collected on seed cotton yield, some of its components and some fibre characteristics, and genotypic and phenotypic correlations among these traits were calculated. In all testing environments, seed cotton yield showed significant and positive genotypic and phenotypic correlations with boll size, seed cotton per plant, seed index, lint index, lint yield and micronaire vallue. On the other hand, seed cotton yield and lint yield had significant and negative genotypic and phenotypic correlations with number of bolls per plant, number of bolls per square metre, 2.5; span length and bundle strength. Hence, breeding for high yielding cotton cultivars can be made through selection for boll size, seed cotton per plant, seed index and lint index
