Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) root yield and quality as influenced by the sowing date and time of harvesting in the semi-arid environment of northern central Sudan

A field experiment was carried ouut during the winter seasons of 1996/97 and 1997/98 in the experimental farm at 'Um Dom', about 20 km south-east of Khartoum. The objective was to determine the optimum sowing and harvesting dates for sugar beet as a potential sugar crop in northern central Sudan. The results indicated that root yield, total soluble solids, sucrose content and sugar yields were significantly affected by sowing date and time of harvesting. These parameters were inversely proportional to delay in sowing date. Sowing as early as 20** of October and harvesting 21 weeks later resulted in the highest root (61 t.haE-1) and sugar (8.5 t.haE-1) yields. Delay in sowing date to 5 ** of November, 20** of November, 4** of December, and 19** of December reduced root yield by 6;, 13.5;, 22; and 38; (average of two seasons), respectively. Sucrose yield decreased by 43.4; with the latest planting. However, root and sugar yields were positively correlated with delay in harvesting date beyond 18 weeks after sowing
