Red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) habitat selection in the Sneznik - Javorniki region was studied on the basis of recorded locations of 17 radio-collared adult hinds and stags within the period between December 1997 and March 2001. Annual home range (P = 0,95) and core area (P = 0,50) of the entire monitored red deer group was estimated by the use of the fixed kernel method. Discriminative analyses of the estimated home range and core area indicate that distance from the nearest road was the most important factor that influenced monitored red deer habitat selection. The selection of the population's core area was also influenced by the presence of feeding places, and the selection of entire home range by the forest structure - vegetation types offering more food and a good cover were preferred. The red deer spatial habitat model was elaborated by the use of estimated discriminative functions, extrapolated for the entire research area.
