1999

Quantitative macrobenthic fauna and their environmental biology were sampled monthly during January 1994 to December 1995 in Sapum Bay, Phuket. Substrate characteristics of grain size and organic content were also analyzed, showing mean grain size at 3 stations to be smaller than 0.063 mm with low organic content. Physical and chemical factors, i.e. salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen found at 3 stations varied in these 2 years but no significant difference was found both in time and space. Mean densities of macrobenthic fauna were 259.07 and 383.89 ind/square m while taxonomic classification showed 64 and 66 taxa in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Species diversity showed higher in 1995 than that in 1994. Mean macrobenthic fauna diversity were highest at station 1 (1.049) and appeared to be decreasing order in seaward direction. Statistic t-test comparing diversity indices between years were not significant. Anoxia and acid condition in soil were shown to influence on distribution and community structure of macrobenthos. Polychaetes dominated both in terms of density and species number. The distribution of macrobenthic fauna was not significant by means of 2 years sampling (p = 0.177).
