To determine the role of progesterone (P4) on the reproductive cycle of Thai native hens (Gallus domesticus), the hormonal pattern was studied on 10 pullets raised at poultry farm of Khon Kaen University. Blood samples were collected twice a week for determining serum progesterone levels, using radioimmunoassay. Data were recorded twice a day on the number of laying eggs, brooding period, raising chick period, and related behaviors. The results found that the progesterone pattern at one week before laying period was 0.129+-0.087 ng/ml and increased rapidly and significantly (P0.01) to 1.090+-0.765 ng/ml during laying period. The progesterone level decreased to 0.053+-0.023 and 0.068+-0.032 ng/ml during period of brooding and raising chicks. In conclusion, a pattern of progesterone in the reproductive cycle was revealed, and may be indicated that progesterone has it role on the reproductive biology of Thai native hens.
