Surimi in the EEC markets
1993
Kruerwal Sthitirat (Department of Fisheries, Bangkok (Thailand))
EEC surimi-based seafood consumption was about 25,000 MT in 1990, mainly imports from the Republic of Korea and Japan. The ad valorem tax is charged for the imported surimi, 15 percent for fresh/frozen surimi and 20 percent for surimi-based seafood products. Many countries try to develop surimi production by itself. However there is no significant development surimi production in Europe for the near future because of the quality problem, non-competitive prices and insufficient quantity of the suitable fish species. There are some more rooms for developing countries to fill this gap, provided that quality must be concentrated.
