Field experiment was conducted in farmer's field at Muangpol District, Khon Kaen Province in 1992 to study the effect of weed management on growth and yield of rainfed, direct seeded rice. Four weed control methods (pre-emergence application of thiobencarp, thiobencarp plus one hand-weeding at 30 days after emergence of the crop, two hand-weedings at 30 and 60 days after emergence of the crop, and weedy check) had no effect on plant height, panicle number/square m, spikelet number/panicle, and 1,000-seed weight, but significantly reduced filled grains/panicle and grain yield. The maximum grain yield was obtained from pre-emergence thiobencarp plus one hand-weeding. However, the highest net profit/rai was recorded from the treatment receiving thiobencarp alone.
