A comparative assessment of domestic and foreign standards of quality of atmospheric air is carried out. In Ukraine sanitary standards are developed for more than 1800 chemical substances. The priority substances, which characterize the quality of atmospheric air in Ukraine, are proved to correspond to the main substances adopted in other countries. The standards are developed, which relate to two periods of averaging out and to average daily standards (24 hrs and 20-min periods) (the calculations are tabulated). Characteristics of dust, nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide, lead characteristics are given. Based on the results of the investigations, the following conclusions are drawn: the comparative analysis conducted witnesses on the necessity for harmonizing the atmospheric air quality standards, which currently are in effect in Ukraine, with the international ones; the existing system of hygienic standards in Ukraine is to be supplemented with a standard for an annual period of averaging out by means of placing the existing average daily concentrations into this range; to carry out the substantiation of new standards for a daily period of averaging out based on analyzing the dose-effect regularities of manifestation of biological effects and taking into consideration the regularities of atmospheric air pollution depending on the period of averaging out the sampling
