Effect of tillage and nitrogen levels on dry matter yield, harvest index and nitrogen use efficiency of wetland rice

Study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different tillage system and nitrogen levels on growth, dry matter yield and nitrogen use efficiency of wetland rice at Gazipur with a view to identify an appropriate tillage technique as well as judicious and efficient use of N fertilizer for wetland transplanted rice. Applied N up to certain level increased plant height, tiller and panicle number per unit area and number of grain per panicle in rice under tillage system. Soil puddling also increased plant height, tiller and panicle number and sterility percentage of rice when N fertilizer was applied, but in the absence of N fertilization no effect of tillage was observed. Nitrogen fertilization up to 60 kg/ha increased the dry matter yield of rice at all tillage systems. Equivalent dry matter yield of rice was obtained from no-till and tilled plots. Nitrogen fertilization increased the N content in rice. Soil puddling at higher level of applied N decreased the N concentration in shoot at 5 weeks after transplanting (WT) and increased in grain at maturity. Increasing the N dose up to certain level increased the N uptake and decreased the agronomic efficiency of applied N fertilizer. Rice absorbed more N from puddled soil than that from the unpuddled one. Increasing level of N doses decreased the physiological efficiency and apparent N recovery irrespective of tillage system, while increasing tillage intensity decreased the physiological efficiency and increased percent recovery of applied N regardless of N levels.
