Study on chemical immobilization of white-handed gibbons in captivity by using ketamine as immobilizing at agent was conducted Chachoengsao Wildlife Research Center from March 15 to October 15, 1994. Twenty white-handed gibbons ranging from 3.2-9.0 kilograms were immobilized using ketamine ranging from 9.6-31.82 milligrams per kilogram of white-handed gibbons induced intramuscularly into forelimbs. With the dosages of 9.6-12.5 milligrams per kilograms of white-handed gibbons, the induction time took from 1 to 3 minutes, and the recovery times took from 56 minutes to 2 hours 14 minutes. No side effect caused by this wide-safety-margin drug was observed. Adverse reactions including emesis, salivation, spastic jerking movements, convulsions and muscular tremors occurred when dosages of ketamine ranged from 13.4-31.82 milligrams per kilograms of white-handed gibbons were injected. The induction times ranged from 1 to 5 minutes and the recovery times ranged from 2 hours 26 minutes to 4 hours 26 minutes.
