Green leafhoppers (GLH), Nephotettix spp. and zigzag leafhopper (ZLH), Recilia dorsalis (Motschulksy), can cause direct damage to rice by sucking the sap from leaves and leaf sheaths. They are also vectors of the major rice diseases. The population density, seasonal prevalence and relationship of GLH and ZLH to SPR 60 and CNT 1 rice varieties were studied in the farmer's fields at Amphoe Lam Luk Ka, Changwat Pathum Thani during the year 1994-1996. Eight crops were cultivated and none of the insecticides were applied. The insects were collected weekly by using D-vac machine. Specimens were then identified and the number of nymphs and adults of GLH and ZLH were conted. One light trap was set for studies of the fluctuation and relative abundance of GLH and ZLH populations. The results revealed that the population of GLH was found to be more abundant in 6 out the 8 crops or 75 percent of total crops. The number of adult males was about 2 times more than that of the adult females. The GLH population was abundant in the vegetative stage of rice growth (81-83 percent), while ZLH population was abundant in the reproductive stage (58-69 percent). Statistical analysis indicated that there was no relationship between the population of GLH and the population of ZLH on SPR 60 and CNT 1 rice varieties, i.e. the living of GLH and ZLH in the field was independent. Results from the light trap catches revealed the most abundant population of GLH in June and of ZLH in March and April. Study on the relative abundance of both insects indicated that during January to May the population of ZLH was more than of GLH but in October more population of GLH was distinctly observed.
