Prevalence of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) in cats with chronic diseases

Study was performed on twenty-eight cats presented to Chulalongkorn University Veterinary Teaching Hospital between June and October 1997 with chronic respiratory disease, chronic gastrointestinal disease and/or chronic urinary tract disease for at least two weeks duration. The prevalence of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) infection was 32.1 percent in cats with chronic disease. Male cats were found more positive for FIV infection than female cats. The mean age of cats with FIV infection was 5.44+-2.51 years old. Cats between 5-7 years old had higher incidence of FIV infection than cats less than 4 years old and cats older than 7 years old. Cats live in Bangkok Metropolitan area had higher incidence of FIV infecion than cats live in other locations. The result showed higher incidence of FIV infection in cats with chronic urinary tract disease (55.6 percent), chronic gastrointestinal tract disease (22.2 percent), chronic respiratory and gastrointestinal tract disease (11.1 percent), and chronic gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract disease (11.1 percent). Cats received home-made diets found positive for FIV infection in this study were all free-roaming cats (100 percent) and cats without history of receiving vaccination (88.9 percent). Hematology results were within normal range. Bood chemistry results varied with type of chronic diseases.
