Growth performance, protein content and nutrient uptake by modern varieties of rice under irrigated condition in Bangladesh

Study was undertaken to evaluate the growth performance, grain protein content and nutrient uptake by seventeen modern varieties of rice grown under irrigated condition during December 1993-April 1994 at the Agronomy Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Seventeen varieties of rice, viz. BR1, BR2, BR3, BR6, BR7, BR8, BR9, BR12, BR14, BR15, BR16, BR17, BR18, BR19, BAU63, IR8 and IRRATOM24 were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The land was fertilized with 80 kg N, 20 kg P, 25 kg K, 10 kg S and 3 kg An per ha through urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively. The highest grain yield was obtained in BR18 (4.94 t/ha) followed by BR9, BR14 and BR3. Straw yield was also highest in BR18 (6.25 t/ha) followed by BR3, BR14 and BR9. Grain protein content was highest in BR3 (9.21 percent) followed by BR6, BR1 and BR12, and lowest in BAU63. The highest N, P, K, S and Zn uptake (236.17 kg/ha) was observed in BR3 followed by BR14 and BR18 while the lowest N, P, K, S, and Zn uptake (149.86 kg/ha) was found in BR6.
