This paper examines resource conservation practices and land tenure in Karen and Lua systems of shifting cultivation in northern Thailand. The paper consists of six parts. Part One is a brief introduction to the Karen and Lua highland peoples. Part Two Presents a review of research on cyclical systems of shifting cultivation in northern Thailand. Part Three provides a summary of Karen and Lua indigenous conservation practices. Part Four is an overview of Karen land tenure systems. Part Five consists of a brief discussion of Thai Land Law and its implications for highland swiddeners. Finally, Part Six gives recommendations for the integration of Karen and Lua indigenous land tenure systems into highland development.
