Attempt was made to sterilize a newly established building of approximately 400 square meters, specially designed for the hatching and holding of specific pathogen free (SPF) chick eggs. The fumigation programme was started with Ektomin 10 EC. (cyanide) treatment directed primarily against arthropods, followed by Superkill (glutaraldehyde 50 percent solution 10 percent W/V, formaldehyde 40 percent solution 26 percent W/V and quaternary ammonium compound 80 percent solution 7.5 percent W/V) spray to kill coccidial oocyst : Virkon (peracetic acid 2 percent) spray and formaldehyde aerosal treatments to against bacteria and Viruses. Bacteriological examination was made by cotton swab 64 samples-sites and by aeration plates 10 sampled-sites of bacteria and yeast plates in hatchery after treatments. Organism were isolated from 12/64 cotton wool swab and 5/10 PCA, 8/10 BA, 8/10 PDA and 7/10 BPL bacteriological monitor plates after final treatment. The practicalities and problems involved are described in details and the rational and purpose of the programme and its monitoring are discussed. The report is expected to contribute towards the establishment of a rational, efficient and standardized fumigation programme for SPF hatchery facilities, under increasing constrants of safety and environment considerations concerning pollution with toxic and corrosive agents.
